Periodontal disease stages

Periodontium – is a complex of tissues that surround and hold the tooth. Its components are gums, dental cementum, periodontium (ligament) and bone
Gingivitis
It is the earliest stage of periodontal disease. Inflammation of gums due to the accumulation of supra- and subgingival dental deposits. The cause is improper daily oral hygiene. There is an insignificant bleeding of the gums while brushing teeth with a brush or dental floss. At this stage, tissue damage is reversible, since the hard and connective tissues supporting the teeth are not yet affected.
Mild periodontitis
At this stage of the disease, the damage to the hard tissue and ligaments holding the teeth is already irreversible, but not so significant. Due to the bone destruction, periodontal pockets under the gum edge are formed, in which food remains and dental tartar accumulate. Timely initiation of periodontitis treatment course and improving oral care at home help prevent further disease progression and prolong the teeth life for many years.
Moderate and severe periodontitis stages
At these stages of the disease, ligaments and hard tissue supporting the teeth are even more damaged until complete destruction, which leads to the teeth loosening, displacement and loss.

Periodontal treatment

The main cause of gum disease development is dental plaque. Accordingly, the main steps for the treatment of gums – is the removal of dental deposits and the creation of good conditions for their cleaning

Gingivitis

At the stage of gingivitis, it is necessary to carefully remove dental tartar, apply anti-inflammatory agents

Mild periodontitis

At the stage of mild periodontitis, it is necessary to remove the dental deposits with special tools, both above the gum and under it. Further special treatment of the tooth root is carried out, which allows creating conditions for the periodontal attachment and reducing the bone pockets

Moderate periodontitis

At the stage of moderate periodontitis, visible deposits are removed above the gum, but under the gum, the deposits cannot be thoroughly removed, since the pockets are very deep. In these cases, special incisions are made and the gum flap is raised to create access for cleaning the calculus and treating the root surface. With moderate periodontitis, the teeth are specially immobilized to create their immobility and prevent their further loosening under the influence of chewing forces.

Severe periodontitis

At the stage of severe periodontitis, the teeth are removed
Expert opinion

Periodontitis, if left untreated, eventually leads to a tooth loss and it is much more difficult to fully restore it than after simple removal. When placing an implant, a certain amount of bone, destructed in case of periodontitis, is needed. Accordingly, the implant placement, this bone must be restored in some way. In this case, there will be a lengthy and costly osteoplasty stage, and only then the implant is placed. Thus, you lose a lot of time and money for expensive procedures. For example, an implant placement along with the osteoplasty in our dental clinic amounts to the sum of 20 full scale tooth cleaning procedures (10 years at a frequency of 2 times a year). It’s up to you to decide which way to go! Gorbacheva Lali Evgenievna
